Dal fry

Among all pulses Tur dal is the most used pulse in Indian cuisine. This year we have shortage of this pulse and many other usual pulses. Some say that this shortage is due to lack of rain but not all agree to it. The real culprit behind this dal fry business is different and as I came to know of it I wished that I should put in on my blog so that my readers will come to know how our country works.

Our political parties such as BJP and its NDA factions need a lot of money to keep the business of politics going on smoothly. This money they get from many resources such as big business and some rich people who want to become leaders in this country. Measure funds come from big business and to keep it coming, political parties have to see that these big businesses continue to prosper in their trade so that they will be able to keep paying to coffer of these parties. This is not news to all of us voters; we know of this strategy of all political parties and whatever party comes in position of power demands funds from these business houses and they also very willingly(!) commit to pay the payola.

We have witnessed some time back how prices of onion shot up and that made much hue and cry in our country. At that time it was onion traders who were forced to pay the payola to ruling party (that time it was Congress and NCP) and as enough funds were collected slowly prices came down to normal. We know of this. Similar price shooting of essential commodities is witnessed from time to time and that explains the phenomenon. Our political pundits are very intelligent. They know that if they continue to pull onion traders every time, that will not be a good practice and so at this time they decided to catch hold of pulse traders. In the pulses Tur dal is he most consumed pulses and so they decided to make that the target. Measure payers are Tatas and Reliance. Both giants are in business of grocery and they have huge stocks of variety of all types of pulses. Tur being the most in them. This year they had to pay a big payola to ruling party and that is obvious as the party has to contest many state elections to get hold of upper house. This is usual business and nothing unusual about it. As prices began to shoot people as expected began to shout on that and the usual tamasha of detecting and confiscating stocks of Tur and other pulses began as expected. About 85000 tons of pulses were unearthed. Government claimed that they have finally found the culprits and people as simpletons were impressed by that. The prices of Tur dal has yet to come to normal, what government is doing of this confiscated dal; nobody knows.

What I noticed in this tamasha of confiscating pulses stocks from various traders is interesting. They did not inspect stocks of Tatas and Reliance! All sundry traders were put to task and they could impress the people that government is doing its job! Prices have yet to come to its real place as more funds are required by NDA to contest more elections and for that they have to protect these giants so that the payola continues.

We see rains are usual excuse to hike prices as these rains are always not coming in time and not giving its dues properly. Even if we have good rains these occasional price rise for fund raising will continue; whenever there will be need for funds there will be price rise in essential commodities and we should know of that. The relation in occasional price hikes and elections we have to understand to get to the roots of this problem.

Prices of protein giving meat are as high as 400/- per kg. Then why not hike prices of protein giving pulses to that level? This is the point put up by political pundits. That means, if these prices of pulses go as high as 400/- per kg we should not be surprised. When I asked one fellow from this political party he told me, people have to pay for the ruling that they choose and there is nothing wrong in hiking prices to collect funds for the political party that wants to serve these people! I wonder, how many readers will agree to this argument and justification.
