Differences in
the two religions - 2
Islam believes that
to please Allah the follower shall pray five times a day. Sufism does
not believe in prayers to please Khudaa, to please Khudaa seeker
shall purify his/her mind of sinful thoughts, pray or no pray. Sufism
prefers meditation and not prayer. However, there are singing
practices in them where they sing in praise of their Guru by calling
him Maula or malik. This is similar to Hindu Bhakti cult. This is a
very important difference in these two faiths, in Islam singing and
playing musical instruments is not permitted. In Sufi faith, singing
and playing musical instruments is a very important part in the
prayer practices. Islam condemns any type of dance plays while
praying for Allah. In Sufi faith, singing along with dancing is
permitted and appreciated. That is why we have to admit that they are
not one religion or any one part of the other. All claims to say that
Sufism is an Islamic practice is nothing short of blasphemy. Making a
lot of clamor while praying is not condemned by the Sufi followers
but Islamic followers consider that sacrilege. In many such
practices, we see there is so much difference in them that to claim
that they are one religion is outrageous. However, some times Muslim
clergy want to consider that way because in Hindustan faithful are
more inclined to all the Sufi practices and to oppose that will
amount to losing hold on them. Nevertheless, when we see history of
relationship in these two faiths we see many incidences where Sufi
saints were killed by fanatic Muslim followers because of there
adamant style to claim that Khudaa is above Allah.
Five pillars of
Islam
- Testimony - The Shahadah, To believe in Allah and only Allah and nothing but Allah and Mohammad is his messenger and only Mohammad one can pray for pleading and no other.
- Prayer – Salah, to pray for five times in the day
- Fast – Sawm, to fast for one month of Ramadan during day
- Alms giving - Zakat and Sadaqah, to donate in the name of Allah to poor people is Zakat but if someone wants to give more than that it is called Sadaqah.
- Pilgrimage – Hajj and Umrah, to visit Mecca and Medina.
Out of these five
pillars excepting the first one The Shahadah, all four were in vogue
in the original Arabic religion, which prevailed before Mohammad
introduced his Islam and his new god Allah. That is why many scholars
insist that Islam is an extension of the original Arab religion and
that is why Mohammad's order that Islam is only for Arabs becomes
clear. Mohammad always insisted to all those who approached him to be
converted to Islam; who were not Arabs that they must stay in their
original religion and should not sway to other religion. Mohammad
always told that God has created different religions for each human
society and that human society must follow that religion and shall
not forget that and go to any other religion. This shows that
conversion of non-Arabs was against the order of the Prophet Mohammad
and therefore blasphemy. However, during Omayyad period conversion was encouraged only for political gains that was against the order of Mohammad and so blasphemy.
All
festivals of Islam were practiced by Arabs even in pre-Islamic times.
Fasting during Ramdan month was also practiced by ancient Arabs. The
only difference Mohammad introduced was that in place of God Hubal,
he declared Allah, the new god of Arabs. Before that declaration,
Allah was adjective of lord Hubal. Allah means highest God or as we,
Hindus call it, Mahadev. We should also note that Mohammad belongs to
the Hanif tribe who were priests in the earlier Arabic religion. We
should also note that Mohammad and his family were chief priests of
temple of Mecca. All these things explain the reason why Mohammad
insisted that Islam is only for Arabs and not for anybody else. As
for pilgrimage, ancient Arabs were making pilgrimage to many
different places in Arabia but after introduction of Islam all those
pilgrimages, to other than Mecca were made redundant. Style of
praying called Namaz also existed before Mohammad introduced Islam
that means, excepting a few changes all so-called Islamic practices
existed I the earlier Arabic religion.
