Differences in
the two religions - 3
Sufism has no such
pillars. Sufism does not believe in a singular claim that Allah (God
outside oneself) is the God. They insist that the almighty is in one
self (inner god) to seek it by meditation is the only method. The
word Khudaa means inner god. It is a Persian name for god within.
Islam rejects
worshiping saints and building their mausoleum or Dargas. Sufism
encourages it and appealing to enlightened saints is highly
recommended.
Sufism does not
insist for any particular prayer time and number of prayers daily but
suggests that the seeker should continuously keep in remembrance
(rumination) of the inner spirit. Inner spirit is Khudaa. Namaz or
Salah as it is called in Arabic is essential for a Muslim to practice
while praying. Sufis do not have any fixed method for prayer. Namaz
is not essential while praying for Khudaa. However, we see that due
to ignorance of this subject some Muslims mistake Sufism as an
Islamic cult and so try to impose Islamic compulsions in many
Darghas. If we see in the past, we see that many great Sufi saints
had actually condemned this practice of Namaz as a must while
praying.
Islam insists on
Sharia. Sufism does not insist for any such regulations.
Islam says by
praying for five times to Allah all sins are, washed away. Sufism
believes in not sinning at all; building up of strong inner voice so
that the desire to sin will never arise. Islam believes in
encouraging fear for Allah in the minds of the believers. Sufism
encourages love for the Khudaa. This shows how radically they are
different in appealing to the god. Mohammad used to tell his
followers that he is the most afraid of Allah and suggests that the
believer should be afraid of Allah and out of this fear; he/she must
not sin. Sufi saint always told through their songs in praise for
Khudaa that in love for Khudaa they can keep from indulging in any
sinful act of thought or body. Fear always encourages disgust for the
thing it fears and never would develop any love for it. All Islamic
teachings are based on this fear psychosis. Sufism builds relation
with god through love for god. Terrorism that we see today,
encouraged by Muslim radicalists comes from this basic policy for
fear, the Prophet inculcated among his followers. Such differences
show how they are not the same religion and that their roots are not
same.
Fasting is not
essential to Sufism at any time at all. Islam insists that the
believer must perform day fast during the Sun in sky as a token of
faith in Allah.
Giving
alms in not essential in Sufism, one may give, may not give, it is
immaterial for the enlightenment of the inner spirit. However, Sufi
ascetic subsist on alms. They will go to anybody for alms and we
often see they move in Hindu localities for alms.
Sufism recommended
Pilgrimage to the Dargas or mausoleum but Pilgrimage to Mecca not
essential. There are no Mosques in Sufi practice. They have places of
mausoleums or Darghas built in place where their saint is resting in
peace. In Muslim mosques, no woman is allowed to enter while men are
working their religious obligations. In Sufi practice, there is no
such compulsion and both men and women can be in the mausoleum for
giving their respects to that saint.
I
suggest to Modi government that they encourage this study amongst the
present Muslim communities in India to resolve differences in
Hindu-Muslim relation. When Indian Muslims will learn that, they are
not truly Muslims but truly Sufi, and so need not take Arabs
seriously many issues will vanish from the scene. If we encourage in
Pakistani viewers this realization that, Pakistani is not a Muslim
but a Sufi; relation in the two countries will improve dramatically.
